The Department of Mechanical & Production Engineering
The department of Mechanical & Production Engineering is one of the 5 departments in the School of Engineering. The department offers bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) degree in Mechanical & Production Engineering which is fully accredited by the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) and the Commission for University Education (CUE). Mechanical & production engineers are professionals trained in designing and manufacturing of industrial products as well as maintaining the plant and machine components. The production engineering component emphasizes on operations and process management and industrial organization.
The department also offers postgraduate degree programmes namely, MSc in Energy studies with options in Renewable energy, Energy management and Energy & Environment, MSc in Production Engineering and PhD in Energy Studies.
The Department boasts of well-qualified and experienced academic and technical staff. These include Mechanical Engineers, Chemical Engineers, Professional Metallurgists and Material Scientists with fast industrial experience.
RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
The department maintains a strong collaborative link with the industry in areas of consultancy, research and development. The Research and Development (R&D) programmes are undertaken by both academics staff and students with support from the laboratories of thermo-fluid, solid mechanics and materials science. These programmes fall under the following broad research areas:-
- Applied Mechanics and Machine Design,
- Manufacturing Technology and Materials Engineering.
- Material Surface modification/treatment technologies
- High temperature corrosion
- Combustion technologies
- Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics
- Industrial Engineering and Management
- Sustainable Energy resources
- Industrial Health and Safety
- Non-destructive-testing techniques
INCOME GENERATING UNITS
The academic and technical staff do offer support to the department's income generating unit which was started in 1992. The unit engages the staff to identify and manufacture marketable engineering products in order to increase their professional experience and generate revenue for the department. The workshops are well equipped to produce a wide range of products.
